what about me?

…just as it is also in you… Colossians 1:6

I am surrounded by talented people. That one is musically inclined; this one is ultra organized; that one always has the right words. The temptation to covet calls daily. The temptation for self-doubt follows closely on its heels like an obedient puppy. I get used to having it around. I am not alone. In addition to gifts and abilities, men and woman compare looks and body shape and personalities and clothes, and the list runs long. None are immune from the comparison bug, not even in Paul’s day.

The church was growing and bearing fruit throughout the Roman Empire. Could it be that someone in Colossae hearing those words would look at themselves and wonder whether the gospel was growing and bearing fruit in them? Could it be that someone reading this has been wondering the same thing? I wonder that at times, and I talk with enough people to know that those lingering doubts are not confined to my head.

What I find, though, is that usually those thoughts come after looking around at others. That is why Paul is quick to point out the truth that everyone needs to hear: the Gospel is growing and bearing fruit in you as well. The Christian life must be lived based upon fact not feeling, for God’s work is not dependent upon feelings. We must stop looking around and comparing ourselves. Instead, we must look up and accept the truth that God is at work in each of our lives for His glory. He has equipped each of us as He chose, and that equipping is perfect for who we are. Embrace who God made you to be and be willing to use your gifts for His glory.
